• Description: Provides the student with the knowledge and skills necessary to work as an emergency medical responder (EMR) to help sustain life, reduce pain and minimize the consequences of injury or sudden illness until more advanced medical help takes over. The course meets or exceeds the 2009 Emergency Medical Services Educational Standards for Emergency Medical Response and meets Guidelines 2020 for First Aid and 2020 Consensus on Science for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care.

Department Note:

• Description: Intended to instruct a student to the level of Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) who serves as a vital link in the chain of the health care team. It is recognized that the majority of prehospital emergency medical care will be provided by the EMT. Students will participate in hands-on application of skills necessary to work as a competent EMT. Students will also perform patient assessment scenarios focused on medical and trauma complaints and treatments of various diseases and injuries, to build competence and prepare them to sit for the state certification exam. Includes all knowledge and skills necessary for the individual to provide emergency medical care at a basic life support level with a fire department or other specialized service.

Department Note:

• Description: Second of two courses required to be eligible to take the California State written exam for certification as an Emergency Medical Technician. Intended to instruct a student to the level of Emergency Medical Technician who serves as a vital link in the chain of the health care team, providing compassionate, impartial patient centered care. Students will participate in hands-on application of skills necessary to work as a competent EMT. Students will also perform patient assessment scenarios focused on medical and trauma complaints and treatments of various diseases and injuries, to build competence and prepare them to sit for the state certification exam. Includes all knowledge and skills necessary for the individual to provide emergency medical care across the lifespan to a wide range of socioeconomic groups, at a basic life support level with a fire department or other specialized service.

• Description: Continuation of EMS 60A. Airway anatomy and management, EKG, 12 leads and implement treatments for various respiratory emergencies. Neurological disorders, cardiovascular emergencies, musculoskeletal injuries and treatment, GI/GU anatomy and disorders. Intended for students in the Paramedic Program; enrollment is limited to students accepted in the program.

• Description: Paramedic skills presented with a focus on unbiased patient care. Patient assessment and medication administration for respiratory, neurological, endocrine, overdose and poisonings, and gastrointestinal conditions for 911 call simulations and case studies. Pharmacology principles and applications. Additional skills include nebulizer/BVM set-up; digital intubation; foreign body airway obstruction; 12 lead ECG interpretation; blood glucose analysis; advanced cardiac life support; pressure infusers; intravenous access. Intended for students in the Paramedic Program; enrollment is limited to students accepted in the program.

Department Note:

• Description: Application of paramedic knowledge and skills in the clinical setting as an intern responding on a 911 ambulance to ill and injured patients while being instructed and evaluated by a field preceptor. The student has the task of initiating, providing, and directing entire emergency patient care while under the supervision of a preceptor. Second of two ambulance field internships required for certification as an EMT-Paramedic in California. Intended for students in the Paramedic Program; enrollment is limited to students accepted in the program.

Department Note:

• Description: This course meets the education requirements as specified by the California Emergency Medical Services Authority, the Emergency Medical Authority of Santa Clara County and the National Registry of EMT (NREMT) of 40 hours. Intended for both pre-employed personnel and those persons currently employed by a fire department or ambulance service within the County of Santa Clara. Review and update the knowledge and skills required for basic certification. Students maintaining their National Registry of Emergency Technicians (NREMT) certification will meet the NREMT transition requirements with this course.

Includes all knowledge and skills training necessary for the individual to provide emergency medical care at a basic life support level with a fire department or other pre-hospital emergency service.
