Umoja—a Kiswahili word meaning unity—is a year-long learning community designed to enrich the cultural and educational experiences of African American students and all who value the African diaspora.
Our program empowers students to achieve academic and personal success through a curriculum that celebrates the history, legacy, and global contributions of African and African American communities.

Umoja Program Eligibility, Application, and Participation Requirements

To qualify for Umoja, students must:
- Be a first-time college student OR have not yet completed ENGL 1A and a college-level Math course.
- Have the Academic goals to transfer to a four-year university, earn a degree or certificate, or complete a workforce program.
- Complete and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at fafsa.gov or the California Dream Act Application for the 2024–2025 academic year.

Submit the Umoja Program Interest Form.
- Meet with Umoja Counselor Dokesha Meacham.
- She will contact you via email after receiving your interest form.
- You may also schedule an appointment directly at meachamdokesha@fhda.edu.
- Complete the Umoja Student Contract Form.
Once accepted, Umoja scholars are expected to:
- Attend the Umoja Orientation (need current info).
- Attend Umoja classes on campus Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
- Meet with the Umoja counselor at least twice per quarter.
- Participate in at least three Umoja events per quarter.
- Complete the designated Umoja courses and maintain a minimum “C” average in all college coursework.
