About the Chemistry 1A Exam
The Chemistry 1A Exam helps determine readiness for CHEM 1A if you have not completed the required prerequisite within the last three years. Review what to bring, how the test works, retest policies, and how to transfer eligible scores.
Who Should Take the Chemistry 1A Exam
You should take the Chemistry 1A Exam if:
- You plan to enroll in CHEM 1A.
- You completed the prerequisite Chemistry course more than three (3) years ago.
Note: Most high school Chemistry courses do not meet the prerequisite.
However, AP Chemistry scores of 4 or higher will be considered.
Required Materials
Bring the following items to your exam:
- Your Foothill Student ID Number.
- A valid photo ID (Student ID card, driver’s license, or passport).
Test Characteristics
- The test is 45 minute timed test.
- Simple calculators and periodic tables are provided.
- Translation dictionaries are provided.
- Assessment testing is ONLY required for those students seeking to enroll in CHEM 1A, but have not completed the CHEM 20 or 25 prerequisite.
- Students must satisfy MATH 105 or higher before enrolling in CHEM 1A.
- Download a sample test.
Assessment results are valid for one (1) year for the date that the score was earned. You may take the chemistry assessment one (1) time per year. No retest per calendar year.
Foothill College accepts only De Anza Chemistry Exam scores for transfer. We cannot accept placement scores from CSUs, UCs, or other institutions.
To transfer your De Anza exam score, complete the Transfer of Scores process.
