Math Assessment & Choosing the Right Course

Math Assessment

Not Sure Where to Start with Math? We’ve Got You

At Foothill, you are in charge of where you start - no placement is required. All students can enroll directly in transfer-level math courses that align with their goals. Your major helps determine which math course is the right fit.

You don't need to complete a self-guided placement for the math courses listed below. Still, we strongly recommend meeting with a counselor to choose the math course that best supports your major and future goals.

Your placement will reflect either your transcript data or your Guided Self-Placement results. If you’re unsure where to begin—especially if you’re considering a STEM major—we’re here to help you choose the right calculus course.

If you are a domestic student or your high school used an American style 4.0 scale grade point average (GPA) grading system, your placement has already been calculated. Your math placement is automatically posted to your MyPortal account based on the high school transcript information you provided when you applied
If you did not go to high school in the United States, never attended high school anywhere, or your high school transcripts are unavailable. Email to the Testing and Assessment Center to complete a guided self-placement for Math.
If you have transfer credit from another college/university or Advanced Placement (AP) scores please complete a Prerequisite Clearance Form.

Foothill’s Math Pathways infographic outlines which math courses you should take based on your major or program. STEM and Business pathways typically require the full Calculus sequence, while Social Science and Dental Hygiene students generally take Introduction to Statistics.

Humanities majors can choose from Statistics, Liberal Arts Math, or Math for Elementary School Teachers. Allied Health programs accept any credit math course offered at Foothill. Learn more about Math Pathways.
