Emerging Technologies Institute

About ETI at Foothill College

Foothill has been pushing the limits of educational technology for decades—we offered fully-online credit classes way back in 1995! Today, the Emerging Technologies Institute (ETI), launched in Summer 2022, carries that momentum forward. ETI brings students, faculty, and staff together to experiment with emerging technologies and transform them into real, hands-on learning experiences for students of all backgrounds.

We started as the "Foothill College Metaverse Institute", but as our projects grew beyond VR/XR, we expanded into AI, quantum tech, blockchain, energy systems, and more. Then, in April 2023, we adopted the name "Emerging Technologies Institute" to match the relevant and timely work happening in our labs.

Whatever you study, ETI is open to you. Our interdisciplinary programs connect students from every major with hands-on labs, workshops, and real-world tech experiences. Jump in, experiment, create, and build the skills that power tomorrow’s careers.

Mission & Scope

ETI continues Foothill’s legacy of innovation in educational technology by exploring new and emerging tools that add real value to teaching and learning. Our mission is to create unique experiential learning opportunities connected to technologies that are reshaping society, and to put those opportunities directly in students’ hands.

The Emerging Technologies Institute:
  • Explores emerging technologies with potential educational impact.
  • Identifies tools and platforms that can enhance student learning.
  • Tests and trains on these technologies in dedicated ETI labs.
  • Recommends technologies for inclusion on the Foothill Technology Roadmap.
  • Supports campuswide communication and training when new tools are adopted.
